By Rebecca Torres | Austin, TexasThree days before my flight to Ho Chi Minh City, I realized I hadn’t applied for my visa. Pure panic set in. I’d been so focused on booking tours and researching street food spots that the actual entry requirements completely slipped my mind.It was a Sunday evening when the realization hit. My colleague asked if I’d printed my visa letter yet, and my stomach dropped. I immediately opened my laptop and started the e-visa application, hands slightly shaking as I uploaded my passport photo. The official processing time says 3 working days. I had exactly that, but with a Sunday start, I wasn’t counting on anything. Paid the fee, submitted everything, and spent the next 48 hours obsessively refreshing the status page. Monday morning, nothing. Monday evening, nothing. Tuesday came and went with that dreaded “Processing” status mocking me.Wednesday morning, 6 AM, I checked again before my alarm even went off. “Approved.” I’ve never felt such relief. Printed the letter at a 24-hour copy shop, packed my bags in a frenzy, and made my afternoon flight with hours to spare.Immigration at Tan Son Nhat was anticlimactic after all that stress. The officer barely glanced at my letter, stamped my passport, and waved me through in under two minutes. All that panic for a two-minute process.Lesson learned: apply for your Vietnam visa the moment you book your flight. Don’t be like me, refreshing a government website at 3 AM wondering if you’ll make it. The system works, but your nerves don’t need the extra workout.
